Ikegami Honmon-ji – The heart of Nichiren Buddhism in Tokyo

Ikegami Honmon-ji (池上本門寺) is located in Tokyo's Ōta ward and is considered one of the most important temples of the Nichiren school. It was founded in 1282 on the very site where the master Nichiren spent his final days, as a guest of the samurai Ikegami Munenaka. It was here that Nichiren passed away on October 13 of that same year, turning the site into a central pilgrimage destination for his followers.
Architecture and monumental grounds
The Ikegami Honmon-ji complex is quite extensive and sits atop a hill overlooking the surroundings, offering a panoramic view of Tokyo. To reach the main temple, visitors must climb the famous staircase of 96 steps, a symbol of dedication and spiritual perseverance.
Among the most notable buildings:
• Hondō (Main Hall): rebuilt in 1964, the heart of the temple's religious practice.
• Goju-no-tō (Five-story pagoda): built in 1608, it's Tokyo's oldest pagoda and an Important Cultural Property.
• Nichiren's Mausoleum: a site revered by worshippers.
• Nitenmon Gate: a monumental gate, also an Important Cultural Property.
Festival and traditions
Ikegami Honmon-ji is famous for the Oeshiki, a major ceremony held every year from October 11 to 13 to commemorate Nichiren's death. Thousands of worshippers take part in a striking nighttime procession with lanterns decorated with paper cherry blossoms — one of Tokyo's most spectacular religious events.
Spirituality and nature
Beyond its historical and religious significance, the temple is surrounded by a green, quiet setting. In spring, cherry blossoms, and in autumn, maples ablaze with fall colors, make a visit especially picturesque.
