Shibuya Sky: Tokyo's skyline at your feet

by Simone Ottuzzi - Omotenashi Anime

What it is and context

Shibuya Sky is a modern 360° panoramic observation deck located atop the Shibuya Scramble Square skyscraper, completed in 2019 and directly connected to Shibuya Station. Opened in November 2019, it quickly became one of the district's most beloved attractions.

A three-level experience

The visit includes:

  • Sky Gate (14th floor): entrance and ticketing, with a glass floor looking down onto the station below.
  • Sky Gallery (46th floor): an indoor, climate-controlled space with digital installations, the "Paradise Lounge," a bar and souvenir shops.
  • Sky Stage (rooftop, 47th floor): a 2,500 m² outdoor area with breathtaking views, featuring relaxation zones on artificial turf, suspended hammocks (Cloud Hammocks), the famous Sky Edge — a photo spot with a low, illuminated barrier — and the interactive Geo Compass pointing out the city's main landmarks.

View, atmosphere and shows

From here you can admire the Shinjuku skyline, Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Mount Fuji (on clear days) and Tokyo Bay. In the evening, the Crossing Light show lights up the sky, projecting 18 beams of light every half hour.

Open daily, typically from 9:00 or 10:00 AM to 10:30 or 11:00 PM, with last entry between 9:20 and 10:00 PM.

👉 Booking online is recommended (fixed time slots, shorter lines). Note: foreign visitors may sometimes have trouble using cards on the official site; alternatives include Trip.com, Klook and KKday.

👉 Tip: aim for sunset for the most striking views, or go in the morning for a better chance of seeing Mount Fuji.

The Roof outdoor bar

From April to December (2025), The Roof Shibuya Sky bar is open: a typical open-air bar with several zones to drink and relax. Reservations are required for private canapé seating (approx. ¥7,000–8,000 per person for 50 minutes, minimum two people).

In summary

Shibuya Sky is much more than a viewpoint: it's an immersive experience combining art, light, architecture and a spectacular view over Tokyo. With three levels, it offers unique moments at every hour of the day and a striking view of the crossing below. Perfect for those seeking excitement, contemporary design and unforgettable photos.
