Sunshine City & Sunshine 60: Ikebukuro's "city within a city"

An integrated urban vision

Sunshine City, opened in 1978 in the Ikebukuro district, is a vast multi-purpose complex bringing together several essential functions: a shopping mall, restaurants, offices, a hotel, a theater, a planetarium, a museum, an aquarium and even a panoramic observatory. It's often described as a true "city within a city" — a self-contained, fully self-sufficient hub in the heart of the metropolis.

At the center of the complex stands the Sunshine 60 skyscraper, a 239.7 m tall building with 60 floors. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in Asia and held the record for the world's fastest elevators. Today it remains one of Ikebukuro's architectural symbols.

Sunshine Aquarium — Tokyo's only public aquarium located on a rooftop: home to over 37,000 animals and 750 species, with shows like Penguins in the Sky and the suspended Sunshine Aqua Ring tank, where sea lions swim above visitors' heads like an oasis in the sky.
Sky Circus Observatory ("Tenbō Park") — The panoramic terrace on the 60th floor of Sunshine 60. Reached via super-fast elevators, it's a "floating garden" with artificial turf, seasonal plants and a panoramic café, open all year round.
Ancient Orient Museum — A small, fascinating museum on the 7th floor of the Bunka Kaikan, featuring archaeological pieces from the Near East and Central Asia, particularly Gandhara, Palmyra and Persian art.
Namco Namja Town — An indoor amusement park run by Namco, with themed games, festival-style food (like the Gyoza Stadium), mascots and fun attractions for all ages.
Planetarium, shopping & pop culture — Inside you'll also find a planetarium, Pokémon-themed shops (like the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo) and Studio Ghibli's Donguri Kyowakoku, plus hundreds of shops, restaurants and a space dedicated to pop-anime cultural events.

How to get there

Sunshine City is easy to reach: about an 8-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station (exit 35), or 3 minutes from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station (Yurakucho Line). The area is served by many JR, subway and private lines, making it a real hub of the city.

The complex is home to a lively community of anime and cosplay enthusiasts, drawing cosplayers from all over the world during events and weekends. That said, this grand urban environment isn't without its quirks: some visitors on Reddit mention a curious, persistent sewer-like smell in the main corridors.
