A transformed history
Ueno Park (上野公園, Ueno Kōen) was established in 1873, transforming the vast grounds of Kaneiji Temple, destroyed during the Boshin War, into Japan's first Western-style public park. It remains an oasis of culture, history and nature in the middle of the city.
Museums for every interest
The park is home to at least six major museums, covering art, history, science and local culture:

• National Museum of Nature and Science — featuring a life-size blue whale model and the preserved bodies of famous dogs like Hachikō

Shinobazu Pond: nature and serenity
Shinobazu Pond is divided into three areas: Lotus Pond, Boat Pond and Cormorant Pond.

• Cormorant Pond: waterfowl and views of the zoo
At its center stands the small Bentendō shrine, dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten.
Nature and seasons
With over 1,000 cherry trees, Ueno Park is famous for the Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival between March and April. Evenings lit by lanterns create a magical atmosphere.
