What is Golden Gai and where is it

Golden Gai is a distinctive district in the heart of Kabukichō, in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. It's a tangle of six extremely narrow alleys, connected by passageways so tight that only one person can pass through at a time. Packed into this grid are over 200 tiny retro-style bars, clubs and restaurants. It's a rare surviving example of Tokyo's pre-"economic miracle" urban architecture, untouched while the rest of the city transformed with wide streets and modern buildings.

A haven for artists and creatives

In recent years, Golden Gai has come back into the spotlight not just as a red-light district, but as a rejuvenated area that's become a gathering place for enthusiasts of music as well as filmmakers, writers, and people from the fashion and entertainment world. Many bars are so small they hold only 4–10 people, often decorated with posters, music and very specific themes (jazz, punk, go, cinema, etc.). Some venues are reserved exclusively for regulars ("regulars only"), while others — those displaying English menus or welcoming signs — are more open to tourists.

Hours, costs and practical tips

• Hours: most bars open around 8:00–10:00 PM and stay active until the early hours of the morning.
• Cover charges and prices: many venues apply a cover charge (usually between ¥500 and ¥1,500), and drinks start at similar prices.
• Photography: taking photos or videos is prohibited without permission, especially since it's a private area and the privacy of customers and owners is protected. As reported on Reddit, taking photos without consent can seriously upset those involved.
• Etiquette: drinking or smoking on the street is not allowed, nor is lingering for long periods or unauthorized photography.

From the outside, the structures may look run-down, but they offer a dreamlike leap back in time. How to get there

Golden Gai is a short walk from the east exit of Shinjuku Station, between the Shinjuku Metropolitan Government Office and Hanazono Shrine, and also not far from Shinjuku-Sanchōme Station.
